Rare Comic Auctions For $40,000!
A rare number one Batman comic is on auction, and will sell for over $40,000 it is believed. Bids stand at $35,000. Only 300 of the rare comic, published over 70 years ago, are still in existence.
Alaskan comic collector Mike Wheat put the comic on auction at the Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries. Wheat is a retired city wastewater treatment plant operator, who kept the Batman comics as an investment. And now he felt it was the right time to sell.
The second and third editions of Batman will be part of the auction, expected to sell for $5,000 each.
The Batman No. 1 comic book was discovered after local businessman Ron Jaeger bought an old dresser at a garage sale in the early 1970s, then kept it in storage for a few years. When Jaeger finally brought it out, he noticed one of the drawers didn’t slide easily.
Three comic books and a few old issues of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner were tucked beneath the drawer and a quarter-inch piece of plywood. The haul included a copy of Batman No. 1, Superman No. 17 and an old issue of a Red Ryder Western comic.
Jaeger then sold the comics to Wheat, who had a reputation as a collector, for £300 in 1974.
